King Oedipus by Sophocles

Theatre Poster

This poster was created for the “Capitão Grancho” theater company in which the play debuting was “O Rei Édipo” (King Oedipus), a classic Greek tragedy. In a nutshell, the play tells the life story of Oedipus, a citizen of Thebes that was abandoned at birth and therefore has no knowledge of the identity of his own parents. Later in his life, he marries his mother and kills his father. As this is a tragic story, I decided to convey this concept in the poster, depicting Oedipus as in his final scenes, tearing his own eyes from his face. The choice to picture him in a non-human form was to convey the aberration that is annexed to incest and the suffering that this character went through.
