Devil's Salazar

Satirical Magazine Illustration

This illustration was part of a compilation of works for a Fanzine called “Cuspir na Sopa” (Spitting on the Soup). The magazine was published in the month of April, in which Portugal celebrates its Liberty Day, so I chose the Portuguese politician António Salazar.

Salazar was the chief of the ministries’ council from 1933 to 1968 and was the head of the military dictatorship. The Carnation Revolution, which overthrew the dictatorship, brought great joy throughout the country and finally gave the people their liberties back, most notably their freedom of expression.

He appears portrayed as a devil because, to a freedom lover like me, he was the personification of everything that can be evil within a country.
